General Types of Insulation

Among the many problems any homeowner faces, the most intriguing probably is the care and replacement of the home’s insulation. While it does not seem as an important matter, insulation alone can be responsible for your home becoming too hot or too cold to live comfortably in it. It should also be mentioned that having the right insulation can save you hundreds of dollars a year in climate control bills.

There are four mayor types of insulation:

Batt. It is the most common of them all, it is also the most preferred as it provides basic coverage in your wall, crawl spaces, ceilings and basements as well as attics. In addition, it is the cheapest one.

Blown-in. This one is preferred by eco-friendly and environmentally responsible homeowners. This is their favorite as it is highly energy efficient and provides a dense effective barrier as well as it is easy to place in areas that are hard to reach, making the process cost efficient and man-hour efficient as well.

Spray foam. This is the top of the crop as it is both energy-efficient AND air sealant, therefore maximizing your savings in energy and heat expenses. This type of insulation is divided into two smaller categories:

• Closed-cell. Preferred in places where flooding is a possibility. It is a hard and vapor resisting foam that will endure a flooding.
• Open-cell. This one does not stand a flood and it doesn’t retard vapor either.

Radiant. This insulation is specific for those areas that are hot. As it is used specially to reflect radiant energy and therefore, heat.

Air Sealing. This type of insulation takes care of all the small and minor cracks in your home that cause for those unwanted “drafts”. In average, you could sum all the draft areas and total a 30-inch-wide window fully open at all times; with the consequential loss of heat and money.

Insulation can be your best friend in taking care of the energy bills and air conditioning systems in your home. But it is, like any other part of your home, important for you to keep it up to date and to replace it once its functionality has been compromised or reduced.
