Fiberglass Batt Insulation

Pacific Insulation Supply saves you time and money when buying Fiberglass Bat Insulation

Insulation is an important part of energy conservation. Since heating and cooling are the biggest drivers of energy costs in most buildings, good insulation is a key to saving energy. Insulation is material used in the walls and attics of homes to seal in comfortable temperatures and seal out winter cold and summer heat. Insulation is like a blanket for a home.
Many different materials are used for insulation, including fiberglass, Styrofoam and other plastic foams, reflective sheeting, straw, and even shredded newspaper. Insulation may come in rigid sheets, loose piles, or rolls. One of the most common forms insulation takes is batt insulation. The most common material for making insulation batts is fiberglass.

What is Fiberglass Batt Insulation?

Batt insulation is a form of insulation that comes in pre-cut sheets designed to fit into wall and ceiling cavities for easy installation. Before installation, batts look like blankets made of insulating material. The pieces come in standard sizes that match certain parts of home construction. Batts are one of the easiest types of insulation to install.

Fiberglass insulation is made of mats of extremely thin glass fibers. This kind of insulation may have a facing made from paper or plastic on one side, or it may be an unfaced mat. Fiberglass is an affordable type of insulation that is easy to work with. Fiberglass is lightweight and fire-resistant. It traps air in the spaces between the fibers to keep your home comfortable.

Why Use Batts?

Fiberglass insulation can come in rolls, batts, or loose fill that is blown in. Batt insulation comes in pre-cut sizes that fit standard spaces in the walls of houses. Common batt sizes are sixteen or twenty-four inches wide and forty-eight or ninety-six inches long. Standard home framing techniques include eight-foot long 2×4 lumber spaced sixteen or twenty-four inches apart. The standard batt sizes fit perfectly in these cavities.

Using batt insulation makes insulating new construction a breeze. The batts are already cut to fit the spaces between wall studs. All the installers need to do is place the batt between the studs and secure it. There is no measuring or cutting, and there is no waste from cut off pieces. Batts can be installed much faster than rolled or blown insulation.

Why Fiberglass Batts?

Fiberglass batts are among the most affordable types of insulation. For a given R-value, fiberglass costs less than just about any other kind of insulation. Unlike plastic foam sheets, fiberglass is flexible enough to be installed around wiring, pipes, and other items included in wall cavities. It is also easy to trim to fit odd spaces.
Fiberglass is also much more forgiving than stiffer plastic insulation. Unlike plastic, the fit of fiberglass insulation doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, having the fiberglass batts a little bigger than the hole to be insulated helps seal around the edges. Plastic foam products must fit exactly – too small and there are leaks; too big and it won’t fit.

Compared to fiberglass rolls, batts are much easier to install in framed structures. If you are working with standard framing, most batts won’t need to be trimmed, just pushed into the cavities. In contrast, you have to measure and cut rolled insulation to get it to fit into wall cavities.

Batts are easier to work with in confined or oddly shaped spaces than rolls. For example, it is almost impossible to get rolled insulation into crawlspaces under pier-and-beam buildings. The rolls just won’t fit. You can pull batts into crawlspaces easily. The batts can often be installed just by fitting them between floor joists.

Batts need much less equipment than blown-in insulation. Rather than renting an insulation blower and feeding it with bales of blown-in insulation, all batts require is a utility knife – and that’s just for the oddly-shaped spaces. Even better, batts work with open spaces and large vertical openings. Some batts just need a couple of staples to stay in place. Others can hold themselves up with friction. Blown-in insulation needs an enclosed space to stay put.

Cheap, easy to install, and with good insulating ability, fiberglass batts are a great choice for insulating homes and other buildings. If you are installing insulation, check out fiberglass batts when you are planning your project.
